ABOUT
"Dr. J" Goosby Smith
I am a speaker, educator, scholar, consultant, and author who is driven by the call to unite humanity across differences while empowering people to become their best selves.
As far as formal education, my Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees are in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. My Bachelor's degree is a B.S. in Computer Science from Spelman College. I'm currently completing my M.Div. from the Interdenominational Theological Center's Turner Theological Seminary.
Having previously served at Pepperdine, Butler, and California State Channel Islands Universities, I presently serve The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in the following roles:
Associate Professor of Management and Leadership
Assistant Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Director of the campus Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center (TRHT)
My research areas are workplace inclusion, classroom inclusion, diversity- and inclusion-related veterans issues, cross-racial dialogue, and interfaith unity.
I am co-author of the book Beyond Inclusion: Workplace interconnectedness, energy, and resilience in organizations and co-editor of the book Blessed are Those Who Ask the Questions. I have written several academic journal articles, and delivered about 100 research and practitioner presentations. I belong to the Academy of Management where I have held a variety of elected and appointed leadership positions in Gender and Diversity in Organizations and Management Spirituality and Religion Division and Interest Groups.
My community service work is done through my memberships in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and Greater St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church. For fun, I belong to American Mensa.
I serve on the Boards of Directors for The Children’s Trust South Carolina, The Foundation for Justice and Peace, and the Charleston Inter-religious Council. One of the coolest things I get to do is serve as 2019-2021 Honorary Commander for Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, as part of Joint Base Charleston's Honorary Commander program which forges mutual connections between civilian and military communities.
I am a nationally known speaker, trainer, consultant, author, facilitator, and advisor regarding inclusion, diversity, and interfaith dialogue in corporate, not-for-profit, educational and military work spaces.
The bottom line: I am singularly focused upon breaking down boundaries within and between humanity!
